(In response to Jens' message on Tue, 8 Jun 2004 15:25:02 +1000, which I did not get as I am not on list but which I noticed browsing through the archives)
Jens, I've just spent an hour pounding my head against this same problem. After tearing apart the "zip"-archive version and the rpm-version, I've found the problem. Sun's changed their packaging setup in a way that seems to break alien badly. Not sure if it even works with rpm, as I don't have a Red Hat system handy to check on. The class in question, as far as I can tell, is /normally/ located in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/rt.jar. However, in the 'zip' archive and the rpm, this file doesn't exist. Instead, we have j2sdk-1.4.2_04/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04/jre/lib/rt.pack. I've not been able to determine the format of this file (it doesn't seem to be the same pack as allegro, which was the only lead I could find). When you uncompress the self-extracting zip archive, it changes the file from a .pack to a .jar. I presume the rpm does the same thing, but alien doesn't seem to understand (or at least, can't translate) whatever the method is that it uses. HTH -- -Nick Pilon
