That may be a bug in the JRE, or an issue in the Shredder Chess code that makes assumptions that aren't always true in some L&F. I doubt Oracle puts a lot of support behind the Gnome L&F for Swing, so I suggest contacting the Shredder Chess developers about this issue. You may also try with Java 8 and see if there is a difference (you can install it with java-package 0.53).
