Yes you are right, and it can lead to subtle issues but this is a risk we accept for the convenience of maintaining only one version of a library. Fortunately most of the time it turns out to be just fine, and if we find any issue we contribute patches upstream to reduce the divergence with the Debian package. Emmanuel Bourg
