The dependency on a x-session-manager (which *is* in the list of dependency alternatives, something I overlooked) was not satisfied, forcing the inclusion of gnome-session. I have now reversed them and committed the change in svn: xfce4 gdm This pulls in xfce4-session first, so when gdm is installed, the dependency is already satisfied and all is well. But to the debian-jr people, to whom I appealed for help on this, I'd still appreciate help giving xfce a more thorough test, as to date my focus has been on gnome, and to a lesser extent, kde.
