1. Check in kdm which window manager is used. Standard configuration is using the same as in your last session. If this was messed up, kdm will try the wrong manager again if you do not change it. 2. All kdm settings are stored in /etc/kde3/kdm (at least on my sarge installation). If you try a clean reinstallation, you should remove all files in this directory before installing kdm again. In my experience, configuration files are not always removed when removing or reinstalling a package. 3. Did you check if there are any configuration files of gdm left over? They may be interfering with the kdm settings.
