Ok, I had an irc session with one of the kate developers, and here is the lowdown.
If I type in 'kate %U' manually in the open with dialogue, it will work! But if I choose the icon in the tree which produces the exact same command line, then it doesn't work. And wait! It doesn't stop there. I cannot save program associations if I use the icons in the tree to select the application I want to open with, but if I type the command line in manually, then the file associations are saved! I am baffled..
