Hello Martin, I have written a small script called by udev, doing this job for me. If a new usb mass storage device is attached, it adds the corresponding entries to /etc/fstab and creates new KDE desktop icons for all logged on users (not root) running a X session. When detaching the device, everything is cleaned up. However you still have to mount manually. If you want to try it, just send me a PM.
