This is a reposting of a message from the list which saved me from a 
completely broken KDE.  How could something this simple escape the corral?

Try changing /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99xfree86-common_start from
exec "$REALSTARTUP"
to
exec $REALSTARTUP

(found on -devel and -x-devel)
