This message is cross-posted to the Debian KDE users' mailing list and to the Libranet users' mailing list.
I am running Libranet Linux 1.9.1 which I have up(?)graded to Debian woody. When I tried to further upgrade KDE to 2.2.1 from unstable, I encountered major problems with an apparent packaging error in kdelibs3. Another user on the Libranet list has reported the same problem. The error messages are below. I upgraded another Libranet installation to KDE 2.2.1 from unstable several weeks ago, a few days after 2.2.1 was released. It was relatively problem-free: indeed, the only glitch was a permissions problem with /dev/dsp that disabled sound for users other than root. Unfortunately, that setup was overwritten when a stupid user (me) inadvertently installed another distribution for evaluation to the wrong partition :-( The problem with kdelibs is of more recent origin. I also have managed to prove again the maxim that it is possible easily to apt-get one's way into an unusable system. I got there very quickly, since this is a new experimental installation of Libranet (installed only yesterday afternoon). It goes to prove that the path to Linux expertise is long and difficult. At present, console- apt was uninstalled as part of the upgrade to woody and cannot be reinstalled because ``deity" and ``deity-curses" (what a wonderful name for any package) cannot be installed. Not surprisingly KDE does not load at all, but for some reason, neither Netscape nor Mozilla will run under other desktops (i.e. gnome, enlightenment). Documented arguments of ``dpkg" do not work, e.g. "dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq kdelibs3" with an error that ``-r" or ``-- remove" are not recognized arguments. In checking the September and October archives of the Debian- KDE mailing list, there were references to the ``kdelibs" problem, but I could not determine if a solution had been found. (If there is and I missed it, no flame-throwers please. Have spent time in the burns unit after ventures onto the mailing list of a certain RPM- based distribution.) I recall one comment on the mailing list suggesting downloading the latest kdelibs3 from http://incoming.debian.org .I did so and grabbed the most recent Konqueror at the same time. Used dpkg -i /<path>/<debname>.deb to try to install. Problem recurred. I recall another comment recommending that woody users install KDE 2.2.1 by compiling it themselves. Is there an FAQ-cum-recipe- book on this point? Are we talking ``apt-get source -- compile foo.bar.src.deb" or unpacking a .src.deb and rebuilding it with ``debian/rules blah, blah"?
