Thanks for the tip about /var/log/kdm.log I was able to figure out that the problem was X (which I have built from CVS). I had not considered this, as kdm worked fine with it before. Reverting to X in Debian testing lets kdm boot fine. I'll now see if I can figure out how to get mine to work.
