Does that mean you use XFree86 3.3.6 (or so, not sure about it...)? But no 
matter what X-version you're running, do NOT (and I mean by no means!) use 
the sis-chipset-accelleration (which is in SVGA-server, I think)!!! It does 
not work due to some problems with LCD. Initialize the VESA (again NOT the 
SiS!!!) Framebuffer-device at bootup (kernel must support it and lilo needs 
to be configured the right way...) and use the Xfb, the framebuffer-X-server. 
This should work (with X 4.1.0 and lower X 4 versions it does, I am currently 
writing from a laptop with the same SiS-Chipset...;-)
