I know the problem, not sure of *your* solution though -- when you upgrade and a new version/build of kde is loaded you will get a message during --configure to the effect of "this package has a new version of kdmrc, do you want to use it?" and you get the usual Y/y/Q/A/N/n/D prompt ... if you're blindly answering Y/y then it clobbers your old conf with the new/stock/generic one -- I generally will answer D to show me the diff on the file and then edit accordingly if there is a major discrepency, otherwise I just keep mine with N/n
