If you start, say Konsole, from an xterm, do you get error messages about incompatible libpng headers and libpng. I have this problem and I don't understand why (I remmeber I had that problem with KDE2 from Debian a long time ago, but KDE2 works fine and also KDE3 which I compiled myself).
