There is XFree 4.2.1 available backported for woody. My opinion for a really stable system with current software is to use backports from woody where necessary (which is what I do, I assumed that everyone did the same and used the xfree 4.2.1 backport for woody). As soon as it's possible to build xfree 4.3 packages for woody I intend to do that because that will enable us to use the new stuff like animated cursors and such; also KDE will contain a set of features that will only be usable with xfree 4.3.
