I had to mess around with this for a hwile - what are you trying to play? Ie ogg mp3 etc
I think it was installing the kdemultimedia-plugins stuff that fixed it - I think you need to log out and in again before it works. I don't get why it isn't listed as a dependency - I just got loads of coredumps from it and arts before I installed it!
