German umlaut mystery

Hi,

my KDE apps are not able to display the german umlaut "�" with Helvetica 14pt 
bold font. Only the small "�" is affected, the other umlauts display nicely, 
even the big "�". GTK apps have no problem showing the "�". 
Any idea?
