Try upgrading X from 4.1 to 4.2 or 4.3, it sounds as if that may be freezing since the rest of the machine is still running. I found 4.2 much better for stability and bugs, and it's available for Woody by adding deb http://people.debian.org/~blade/woody/i386/ ./ to /etc/apt/sources.list. Nick
