Getting spell check to work in KMail

running KDE 3.1.1

In KMail, when I click on Tools/Spelling, I get an error dialog with:           
        "ISpell/Aspell could not be started. Please make sure you have ISpell or
        Aspell properly configured and in your PATH."

ispell and aspell are installed in my PATH variable.  In a terminal typing 
just "ispell" or "aspell" will indeed run those programs.

What's missing??
