OK. This corrects at least part of the problem with KDM. Another problem with kcontrol: I cannot enable a password-less login (home machine).
I don't think the preferences menu show up on the Kmenu unless you have used it before ? It is not showing up on the root account. Of all accounts, root should be able to run kcontrol.
