No custimization was required to get the system up and running. Of course I had to add some rules to get my usb-storage devices to always have the same device (or rather their devices are always linked to the same file, like /dev/sdX (memstick) -> /dev/memstick). Changing or adding the entries to fstab is of course also needed. udev uses a devfs like naming scheme (/dev/bus0/host0/disc0.....) by default, but automatically cretates link to the "classic" devices (hda e.g.). Aside from the usb-storage devices I had to tweak the settings for my USB printer, which was not assigned a device for some reason (at least it was not assigned a device CUPS was willing to use with the USB backend). Part of the trouble I had, may have been the fact, that I had to learn how to write rules, so I probably made some mistakes. Currently my DVD-+RW is not recognized by k3b. It seems like udev does not make the needed links (hdc) but I have not really looked into that. Aside from that my system seems to work fine. > Right, so you need ramfs in your kernel also, right? I don't know if udev itself needs ramfs, or if that is a speciality of the debian initscript for udev. But yes: ramfs is required (at least for the SID package). > My idea of a rescue CD these days is Knoppix. Hmm. My Knoppix CD is about > a year or more old, I think; better update it... Knoppix is fine. Just take care, that you can mount your harddisks, more isn't required. After disabling the etc/init.d/udev script the system should come back up without udev, so one can apt-get remove it. Actually when I found that my DVD-RW didn't work directly, I simply removed udev, rebooted, burned a DVD and reinstalled udev... A quick and dirty workaround until I have more time... Always remember: this is rather "bleeding edge"... You're out on the wild side of OSS... ;-) But the more people give it a try and report bugs, the better it will get.
