Good news! I did an strace this weekend and managed to locate the probable cause [1]. After that Ben Burton has been very quick to squash the bug (thanks Ben!). I think the new packages (4:3.2.3-1) are already in the pipeline and hopefully will be in testing pretty soon [2].
