If you are using kdm or another display manager, a very certain method is: - - log out from KDE (end session only) - - when the login screen is shown, switch to VC1 using ctrl-alt-f1 - - execute '/etc/init.d/kdm restart' as root This will not only completely restart KDE, but X11 as well.
