Sounds like yet another example of the program associations bug: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92134 Have you tried opening a text file in kate or kwrite over an io-slave like ftp:// or fish:// ? If it opens the file from cache too instead of directly over the slave, then it's pretty certain you have the above issue.
