Due to an apt screw-up I had to reinstall lots of things
(everything...), including kdm startup scripts. I could choose at a
certain point to install the original files (Y) or to keep the current
files (N). I chose Y there and with the original startup scripts kdm
worked again! nfortunately I do not know which the scripts are...
