I agree entirely. KDE respects the DPI from the X server, and GNOME doesn't.
I have one set of settings that I use on multiple computers, KDE always looks
great because at 10pt font is always 10pts high on the screen (and after all
it is the physical size of the font that determines whether my poor eyes can
read it or not). GNOME forces the DPI to 96x96 and so the fonts are
different everytime. It's a nightmare invented by Microsoft who think DPI is
some sort of global zoom setting.
Everyone: please lose the -dpi settings from your X server lines. If your DPI
is not being detected properly by the X server talking to the monitor you can
manually set the physical size of your monitor with the "DisplaySize" setting
in the monitor section of your X config; e.g.
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 30-70
VertRefresh 50-150
Option "DPMS"
DisplaySize 345 259
EndSection
Where the display size is specified in millimetres.
