Hi, I have for quite a while now, I'm a kde user and I use openoffice.org and its kde integration package openoffice.org-kde.
If I set opensymbol font as my menu font in kcontrol, and that's the font I use, all the characters in the openoffice menus are displayed as some small rectangles. I have reported this bug ( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=361397 ) but I haven't found a solution since, and I received no feedback from the maintainer.
