That wasn't my experience - on a pristine amd64 lenny install, I simply dropped the downloaded libflashplayer.so file into the mozilla plugins folder, and it worked flawlessly. I suspect your machine may have had some old flash stuff lingering, that was removed by installing and removing gnash? Or the gremlins were out in force!
