I'm using closed drivers 190.42 from Nvidia's site for a GT 8600 without issues 
at all. Most of my system is Squeeze, only packages for KDE are from Sid, so 
perhaps, if you are on Sid, you upgraded some Xorg related stuff that screwed 
everithing up.
If I were you I'd try to log on another D. E. or change KDE's window manager to 
see if that "snow" appears as well.
