Not sure about the change -- but there was https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339090 or, originally, https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=761252 (also, IIUC, this should break filtering more-or-less permanently, not off-and- on). fixed in 4.14.2 (but as far as I know, 4.14.2 is not out yet).
