Thanks to Luigi's suggestion, I found out why KDialog was so slow. It depended on some shortcuts I put in the Places section, pointing to some NFS directories. When those NFS directories are unavailable, KDialog takes minutes to open.
Now, while this appears to be a problem in KDialog, it is not in Dolphin. So it seems something is wrong in KDialog. Should I submit a bug report on this issue? Thanks, Davide
