I managed to solve the issue, the culprit was the nvidia driver. I purged all the nvidia proprietary packages and apt proposed to install the following: libegl-mesa0:amd64 (17.2.2-1, automatic), libegl-mesa0:i386 (17.2.2-1, automatic), libgbm1:i386 (17.2.2-1, automatic), mesa-vdpau-drivers:amd64 (17.2.2-1, automatic), libwayland-server0:i386 (1.14.0-1, automatic), libglvnd0:amd64 (0.2.999+git20170802-5, automatic), libglvnd0:i386 (0.2.999+git20170802-5, automatic) Now everything works again! But I have to check what happens if I reinstall the nvidia driver.
