But as you ask: In my opinion, delivering the kernel with binary blobs is a smaller violation of the social contract than to remove important functionality or further delay the release of sarge. So, I think this smaller violation is justified by avoid the larger one. (Or in other words: In my opinion, it's ok from the point of view of the social contract to keep the status quo of the kernel.) Please be aware that there is another issue with GPL-incompatibility that needs to be solved in either case, see the referenced decision by Anthony.
