I was going to re-test the situation, figured I'd take a bit of time over the weekend and come up with something. So, I updated my system (testing)... And grabbed the latest *init*, mdadm and lvm2 packages from 'unstable'.
I rebuilt the image... And to my surprise, it worked! Sadly, I wasn't expecting it to be magically fixed. So I wasn't fastidious about upgrading the other packages piece by piece. That might be a good idea, so that we can understand the problem as opposed to just feeling happy that it is gone. Thanks for all the hard work, Max
