Another stange thing: Comparing the disk and the data on the HD with k3b shows differences. "cmp"-ing the corresponding files in the filesystem on the DVD and local drive don't show any changes.

should never have even seen that 2.6.8-3 package you are referencing, since it
never reached any archive.
Can you please try the latest kernels, and verify that this is indeed fixed
for you ?
