Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686 Version: 2.6.8-3 Hi,
it seems that the 2.6.8-3 kernel image reacts very slow. After upgrading my laptop (Sony VAIO PCG-F709) to the latest testing version of the 2.6 kernel and starting KDE, I can watch every stroke on the keyboard appear on the screen. Here is some information: [I] [EMAIL PROTECTED] saruman $ uname -a Linux rivendell 2.6.8-1-686 #1 Tue Sep 14 00:22:58 EDT 2004 i686 GNU/Linux [I] [EMAIL PROTECTED] saruman $ ls -l /lib/libc.so.6 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Sep 13 08:46 /lib/libc.so.6 -> libc-2.3.2.so Running top I can see, that the system always has a load around 2.5 on my Pentium III, the X-Server always needs 30% of CPU time: top - 15:20:24 up 7:13, 2 users, load average: 2.01, 1.95, 1.73 Tasks: 103 total, 1 running, 102 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 69.3% us, 11.5% sy, 0.0% ni, 18.9% id, 0.0% wa, 0.3% hi, 0.0% si Mem: 256756k total, 228868k used, 27888k free, 16872k buffers Swap: 514072k total, 139892k used, 374180k free, 83484k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 2660 root 15 0 37624 17m 14m S 40.7 7.1 80:50.45 XFree86 2832 saruman 15 0 37328 12m 32m S 11.9 5.2 35:47.24 kdeinit 2941 saruman 15 0 60604 22m 35m S 10.8 8.8 13:13.38 kopete 4262 saruman 15 0 27336 10m 24m S 2.9 4.1 0:36.28 kdeinit 4961 saruman 17 0 2096 1080 1876 R 2.0 0.4 0:01.63 top 2815 saruman 15 0 25036 9948 22m S 1.7 3.9 1:43.15 kdeinit 2830 saruman 15 0 26424 9.8m 23m S 1.2 3.9 0:43.24 kdeinit 2875 saruman 15 0 115m 39m 53m S 0.9 15.9 20:28.12 kontact 2190 root 15 0 2112 716 1780 S 0.3 0.3 0:00.26 dhclient3 2726 saruman 15 0 29284 12m 25m S 0.3 5.0 1:54.74 kdeinit 2738 saruman 15 0 32344 9764 29m S 0.3 3.8 0:48.86 kdeinit 2780 saruman 16 0 22428 7448 20m S 0.3 2.9 0:02.61 kdeinit 2829 saruman 15 0 22692 7604 20m S 0.3 3.0 0:18.26 kdeinit 2837 saruman 16 0 2172 756 1876 S 0.3 0.3 0:55.66 ksysguardd 2841 saruman 15 0 24244 9096 21m S 0.3 3.5 0:34.42 kdeinit 2854 saruman 15 0 27012 9924 24m S 0.3 3.9 0:58.01 kdeinit 2859 saruman 16 0 27420 10m 24m S 0.3 4.2 0:18.74 korgac [I] [EMAIL PROTECTED] saruman $ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 8 model name : Pentium III (Coppermine) stepping : 3 cpu MHz : 202.989 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 2 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse bogomips : 362.49 [I] [EMAIL PROTECTED] saruman $ cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 256756 kB MemFree: 27868 kB Buffers: 17504 kB Cached: 83600 kB SwapCached: 54500 kB Active: 171464 kB Inactive: 19100 kB HighTotal: 0 kB HighFree: 0 kB LowTotal: 256756 kB LowFree: 27868 kB SwapTotal: 514072 kB SwapFree: 374184 kB Dirty: 72 kB Writeback: 0 kB Mapped: 133092 kB Slab: 30284 kB Committed_AS: 268656 kB PageTables: 1848 kB VmallocTotal: 770040 kB VmallocUsed: 7980 kB VmallocChunk: 761764 kB I know that my memory is almost full, but even when the system has been booted the machine reacts still slow. I didn't have that behaviour wit the 2.6.8-2 kernel image. Regards, Michael
