I also had problems on my debian (testing) since I did upgrade my kernel from 2.4.26 to 2.4.27 (was yesterday).
Not with a palm, but with an other package that accesses temperature sensors over the serial interface (ttySx --> package digitemp)

where you can follow the reason for the problems on serial interfaces with kernel-image-2.4.27 for the digitemp package.
The workaround that solved my problem with digitemp: --> downgrade kernel from 2.4.27 --> 2.4.26
maybe, this solves also your problem with the palm !
