A little bit of information on this bug: after reproducing it I have tried 2.6.11, which appears to be in a somewhat better shape (at least, the picture comes up when using XFree's 'suncg6' driver). I have then tried to backport the changes in drivers/video/cg6.c, however it is not enough: 2.6.8 with backported changes to the driver still fails (blank screen upon starting X). I do not see an easy way to fix it otherwise...
