The soundcard atiixp is correctly detected and the module is loaded but
/dev/{dsp,mixer} are not created. It is a 2.6.8-alsa problem. Compiling
new alsa sources fixes the problem. It is also fixed on 2.6.11 from sid.

well it is quite known that the old alsa inside of 2.6.8 is not
the best vintage. the sarge kernel is frozen.
only security patches are backported.
anyway thanks for testing 2.6.11 and the feedback that it works.
