Thanks for the hint. It took me a while to figure out how to make the downgrade work. Installing old linux-image package is not enough. One must also run "flash-kernel --force 4.4.0-1-armmp-lpae" otherwise, the card still boots on linux 4.5 kernel. Note that any linux-image upgrade will reruns flash-kernel which, by defaults, sets the boot to use latest kernel.
