--- Begin Message ---Package: src:linux Version: 4.9.18-1 Severity: important Tags: upstream Dear Maintainer, I believe I have a bug that has not been reported. There are other bugs involving i915 flickering but I haven't found one that seems to describe these circumstances or that offers a fix that worked in this situation. The problem is that the screen blanks for approximately a single frame intermittently. When the computer is cold, either first switched on or resuming from suspend the blanking is at a rate (that varies apparently randomly) of approximately 5Hz-10Hz but after a period of approximately a minute or two this settles down to a slower rate, somewhere in the region of 0.5 - 0.1Hz, with occasional bursts of 5-10Hz activity. In all cases the blanking happens in an apparently random and irregular (but bursty) pattern. * What led up to the situation? Installation of Debian Stretch on a new (so no prior working state for comparison) Acer Switch Alpha * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel Result: no change in behaviour. Boot with i915.enable_psr=0 Result: no change in behaviour. Boot with i915.enable_rc6=0 Result: no change in behaviour. Boot with i915.modeset=0 Result: Flickering reduced to horizontal black lines across screen rather than whole-screen blank. The flickering is much less frequent and there is no output in kern.log (with drm.debug=0x1e) when the screen does flicker - I think the flickering in this case may be another (possibly entirely unrelated) issue. Boot linux-image-4.10.0-rc6-amd64 from experimental Result: no change in behaviour (and identical log messages with drm.debug=0x1e). Boot linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 Result: Same effect as booting 4.9 with i915.modeset=0. The screen appears to blank more frequently when displaying a mostly white screen rather than a mostly black screen and also after the computer has been off or suspended for a while (i.e. is physically cold). Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist in identifying the source of this problem. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 4.9.0-2-amd64 ([email protected]) (gcc version 6.3.0 20170321 (Debian 6.3.0-11) ) #1 SMP Debian 4.9.18-1 (2017-03-30) ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.9.0-2-amd64 root=UUID=6cb64915-1a3d-457f-993a-0e9bebf5c9ae ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: The following is dumped into /var/log/kern.log once for each time the screen blanks when kernel is booted with drm.debug=0x1e: Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.129803] [drm:intel_get_hpd_pins [i915]] hotplug event received, stat 0x01000000, dig 0x11101010, pins 0x00000010 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.129857] [drm:intel_hpd_irq_handler [i915]] digital hpd port A - short Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.129945] [drm:intel_dp_hpd_pulse [i915]] got hpd irq on port A - short Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.130554] [drm:intel_dp_read_dpcd [i915]] DPCD: 11 0a 84 41 00 00 01 c0 02 03 00 00 00 0b 00 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.131744] [drm:intel_dp_check_link_status [i915]] DDI A: channel EQ not ok, retraining Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.132801] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using signal levels 00000000 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.132864] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using vswing level 0 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.132924] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using pre-emphasis level 0 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.132985] [drm:intel_dp_program_link_training_pattern [i915]] Using DP training pattern TPS1 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.133765] [drm:intel_dp_start_link_train [i915]] clock recovery OK Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.133825] [drm:intel_dp_program_link_training_pattern [i915]] Using DP training pattern TPS2 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.134930] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using signal levels 01000000 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.134992] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using vswing level 0 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.135054] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using pre-emphasis level 1 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.136121] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using signal levels 02000000 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.136180] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using vswing level 0 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.136243] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using pre-emphasis level 2 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.137309] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using signal levels 00000000 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.137370] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using vswing level 0 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.137433] [drm:intel_dp_set_signal_levels [i915]] Using pre-emphasis level 0 Apr 27 06:57:25 switch kernel: [ 242.138596] [drm:intel_dp_start_link_train [i915]] Channel EQ done.
