I've now solved my problem by getting a new sound card (SB live). Kernel
2.6.12-1-686 can cope with this even though it can't with the Crystal 4251.
I see also that (unless I missed something) I am totally out of place on
this list and bid you all goodbye, with thanks for all your work on kernels.
