CONFIG_EFI_VARS_PSTORE_DEFAULT_DISABLE should be set.
Disables writing various crash info to the UEFI NVRAM by default.
UEFI NVRAM is of limited size and of limited write endurance.
Exceeding those limits may result in bricked motherboards.

It's also very useful in writing kernel crash logs, helping debugging.

As you mentionned, this bug is quite old. There was (and maybe still are)
buggy motherboard / firmware implementations. That doesn't mean the feature
shouldn't benefit to all those people with correct implementations.
The code has been hardened in the kernel, and it's also possible to not mount
/sys/fs/pstore at runtime for buggy platforms. I think it's enough.
