UEFI NVRAM is of limited size and of limited write endurance.

As you mentionned, this bug is quite old. There was (and maybe still are)
buggy motherboard / firmware implementations. That doesn't mean the feature
shouldn't benefit to all those people with correct implementations.
The code has been hardened in the kernel, and it's also possible to not mount
/sys/fs/pstore at runtime for buggy platforms. I think it's enough.
