Package: src:linux
Version: 5.4.8-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

I have noted in the last days that sometime the desktop freeze from some fraction of second to some seconds and then the desktop is usable again without problems.

I have had a longer freeze, then I get a black screen with all blocked.
I have used the Magic Key Ctrl-AltGr-REISU, but I can only have the keyboard leds working, Ctrl-Alt-Fx working, but I cannot reach a console or the Desktop GUI, so I have done a Ctrl-AltGr-B to reboot.

After reboot, I see the following errors in the log:

Probably this is due because I have reboot the PC.

I have searched back to see if there are error for the previously momentaney freezes and I found the following line more than once.

kernel: [29704.922284] i915 0000:00:02.0: Resetting rcs0 for stuck wait on rcs0

I think that I get all the freezes when I'm using firefox.
I can reproduce the "dead" freeze when I use an internal web application for about 0,5h - 1h. The freeze seem to be random and not on a specific operation (I can do the last operation that generate the freeze after a reboot).

I have noted that the line before or near before is always the following (but I don't think this is related): wpa_supplicant[639]: wlp1s0: Reject scan trigger since one is already pending

I have see that this error "Resetting rcs0 for stuck wait on rcs0" start from the day 14/01/2020 and the day before: 13/01/2020 I have installed the following packages (without reboot) Install: linux-source-5.4:amd64 (5.4.8-1, automatic), linux-image-5.4.0-2-amd64:amd64 (5.4.8-1, automatic), linux-config-5.4:amd64 (5.4.8-1, automatic)

After the reboot I see the following rows with i915:

Jan 15 11:42:43 prinad03 kernel: [ 18.848491] i915 0000:00:02.0: vgaarb: deactivate vga console Jan 15 11:42:43 prinad03 kernel: [ 18.851182] i915 0000:00:02.0: vgaarb: changed VGA decodes: olddecodes=io+mem,decodes=io+mem:owns=io+mem Jan 15 11:42:43 prinad03 kernel: [ 19.133848] i915 0000:00:02.0: firmware: direct-loading firmware i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin Jan 15 11:42:43 prinad03 kernel: [ 19.134105] [drm] Finished loading DMC firmware i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin (v1.4) Jan 15 11:42:43 prinad03 kernel: [ 19.186345] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20190822 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0 Jan 15 11:42:43 prinad03 kernel: [ 19.513450] fbcon: i915drmfb (fb0) is primary device Jan 15 11:42:43 prinad03 kernel: [ 19.537737] i915 0000:00:02.0: fb0: i915drmfb frame buffer device Jan 15 11:42:43 prinad03 kernel: [ 19.879434] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: bound 0000:00:02.0 (ops i915_audio_component_bind_ops [i915])

I cannot reproduce the freezes if I don't use firefox.

If I boot with the previus Linux image: linux-image-5.3.0-3-amd64, I have no freeze and I can work all the day without problems.

Let me know if I can do some test (I don't have always access to the machine, so I can need some time to make more tests)

Ciao
Davide
