Hi! Just reporting that I'm seeing the exact same behaviour as the original submitter when I upgraded the 4.9.0-8-amd64 kernel on my Debian Stretch laptop to a 4.9.0-12-amd64 kernel. I also tried installing the 5.4.0-4-amd64 kernel from Sid but it didn't help, the touchpad still got recognized as a generic mouse.
