Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.5-1
Severity: normal

  Hi,

I'm using my computer to read DVD images with mplayer on the second screen
attached to HDMI (Intel card). This HDMI output is linked to an AV receiver.
I do not use this installation very often. But, a few days ago, I did not
succeed into sending sound and video throught HDMI. My goal here was to send 6
channels through HDMI (so the sound is decoded by mplayer and sent as PCM
flows). It does not work. mplayer displays:

[AO_ALSA] Unable to set buffer time near: Invalid argument
Failed to initialize audio driver 'alsa:device=hw=0.7'
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound

And then, of course, no sound.
If I send the sound through spdif (another plug also connected to the AV
receiver), it works (but, of cause, with only two channels)
If I use HDMI for the sound and I ask mplayer to use only 2 channels,
it works.
If I use HDMI for the sound and I ask mplayer to use 1, 3, 4, 5 or 6 channels,
it fails with the previous message

After trying lots of configuration, after googling a lot, I found this webpage:
http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2014-February/072265.html

And, indeed, I was suffering the same bug.
With 64 as value in /proc/asound/card0/pcm7p/sub0/prealloc, I have the previous
error message from mplayer.
But mplayer works fine if I write 63, 65 and 128 in
/proc/asound/card0/pcm7p/sub0/prealloc (I did not test other values)

So, it seems to me that there is a bug with the 64 value when using not 2
channels.

Even if this bug is not fixed, I hope this bug report will help people with
similar problems as there is an easy workaround.

  Regards,
    Vincent

Hi

This bug was filed for a very old kernel or the bug is old itself
without resolution.

If you can reproduce it with

- the current version in unstable/testing
- the latest kernel from backports

please reopen the bug, see https://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control
for details.

Regards,
Salvatore
