In this case you might want to contribute a solution in form of a
proposed merge request to the packaging? That would be welcome so that
for instance Ben might review what you are proposing.

p.s.: FWIW, no keeping a huge amount of bugs open is unhealthy for the
team, and if there is no action on bugs not worthwile to take action
on it is good to close those. Prevously the team had more than tousend
open bugs, which made impossible to stay on track on issues. I
acknowledge that we have different views on it and for you your issue
is important. But then we need to see help implementing it (and if it
needs work upstream first, get the change accepted upstream first).
