Severity: wishlist
[Uhm, I'm not familiar with the policy for patch inclusion in the Debian
kernel, so feel free to immediately close the bug if the request isn't
appropriate. It's just a wishlist.]
Hello,
I'd love to see the inotify patch [1] included in Debian kernels. For
more than a year now, I've been very happy using the precompiled
images from the Debian packages, and currently inotify has forced me
to compile again my own kernel.
[1] http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/rml/inotify/v2.6
Multiple applications can benefit from inotify, including gamin and
Beagle. Also, it seems to me much more easily usable from scripts than
dnotify (which is currently the reason I use and need it).
As the patch has been known to cause kernel oopses upon umount events
(see, e.g., [2]), I attach a patch from Ubuntu's linux-source-2.6.10
that disables the inotify code unless the 'inotify' option to the
kernel is passed at boot time. Note, however, that these oopses
happened with inotify 0.20, and that all known oopses are fixed in
inotify 0.22.

Thanks for considering,
