Hello,
Thank you for the quick reply. I tested the patch and it fixes the problem
on my laptop.
What I did
- Booted linux-image-6.12.111+deb13-amd64 (Debian 6.12.111-1).
- Took drivers/hid/hid-asus.c from linux-source-6.12 6.12.111-1 and applied
0001-HID-asus-fortify-keyboard-handshake.patch (applied cleanly, with
offsets of -1 and -2 lines).
- Built only the hid_asus module against the installed headers, tested it
first with rmmod/insmod, then installed it in
/lib/modules/6.12.111+deb13-amd64/updates/ and regenerated the initramfs.
Result
- Keyboard: works now at the LightDM login screen (it did not before).
- The "Asus failed to request functions: -75" and "Failed to initialize
backlight." errors are gone, and /sys/class/leds/asus::kbd_backlight is
registered.
- Fn+F2/Fn+F3 (keyboard backlight brightness) work again.
Without the patch (6.12.111):
asus 0003:0B05:19B6.0003: Asus failed to request functions: -75
asus 0003:0B05:19B6.0003: Failed to initialize backlight.
With the patch (first test, module loaded by hand), a new non-fatal warning
appears:
asus 0003:0B05:19B6.0003: Asus handshake 5e returned invalid response:
5e ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff 00 00 ... (rest zeros)
Boot log with the patched module installed:
facundo@ASUSROGG18:~$ sudo dmesg | grep -i "asus 0003"

Hardware, in case it is useful: ASUS ROG Strix G18 G814FP (BIOS
G814FP.316), keyboard USB ID 0b05:19b6, bcdDevice 2.15.
Please consider including e82ae34af29e ("HID: asus: fortify keyboard
handshake") in the Debian 6.12 kernel, or confirm whether the stable series
will pick it up. Feel free to forward this result upstream. I can test
further kernels or patches if needed.
Thanks,
Facundo
