        Firstly, the generated images pre-depend on debconf; and a
 missing dependency means all bets are off as far as installation
 goes.

        Secondly, _all_ user interaction needs to happen using
 debconf; not doing so is a serious policy violation at this stage of
 the game.

        Given these, not having a non-debconf mechanism to interact
 with the users is not what I would consider a bug.
