I have this same problem, accept its only with the 2.6.8-3-k7 kernel and its a different chipset. I resolved it by installing the 2.6.8-3-686 kernel and all IDE disks detected correctly.
I could, however, get the disks to be detected, if once I booted up off my SCSI disks I ran fdisk on each HDD and then simply quit. It seemed to "turn them on". Not a very practical solution though.
